You can still play Spotify music using those commands in Siri, but in iOS 14.5, you might not have to say "on Spotify" at all anymore. That integration between Spotify and the iPhone's virtual assistant made it possible to say things like "Play my liked songs on Spotify" and "Play on Spotify." Spotify even favored its own Voice assistant - which just got " Hey Spotify" hands-free capabilities in April 2021 - until iOS 13 when Siri could finally play Spotify music for Spotify users. Shouldn't be too hard to do, but then again, it's not too hard to press F8 twice if it wasn't running either. It's no secret that Apple and Spotify haven't exactly gotten along in the past, but things are looking better than ever in iOS 14.5.įor years, Spotify's platform felt very disconnected from the iPhone, mostly because of Siri incompatibility. So, instead, I fell back to my favorite free third-party keyboard/shortcut tool, QUicksilver. I couldn't get my Mac to run the Automator service through a keyboard shortcut. I followed the top-rated answer at and created an Automator app running a simple Applescript: tell application "Spotify" Looks pretty powerful.īut, this gets you pretty close?.

I couldn't see how to create the steps shown in that link, but if you want to get into customizing that app, I'm sure it would work. I installed Karabiner, as linked in the question. If neither are opened, neither will launch, so the key doesn't default to iTunes for me. For me, the Play/Pause key plays whatever app (iTunes or Spotify) was last playing. Finally got to try this on a Mac with that kind of keyboard (iMac).
